What is the NPQ?

The Nonverbal Personality Questionnaire (NPQ) is a 136-item nonverbal questionnaire that is suitable for the assessment of normal adult personality in counseling and research settings. Nonverbal assessments are ideal for cross-cultural comparisons and for people who have reading difficulties or language barriers. The items are represented by illustrations that depict personality-relevant behaviors based on Murray’s system of needs, the scales of the Personality Research Form (PRF), and the Five-Factor Model of personality.

Why Should I Use the NPQ?

CONVENIENT. The NPQ can be administered on SIGMA’s online platform – SigmaTesting.com. Reports are generated immediately. Results are presented using graphs, scores, and scale descriptions.

EASE OF INTERPRETATION. The NPQ can be easily administered in different languages and countries without the need for translation. And unlike inkblot tests, these structured nonverbal assessments are simple to score and interpret.

RELIABLE AND VALID. Several studies have evaluated these nonverbal assessments in North American, European, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries and have demonstrated strong support for the reliability, validity, and general applicability of the assessment. Support for the psychometric properties of the NPQ and the FF-NPQ include satisfactory mean internal consistency reliability (alpha) values for a Canadian sample (.75), a Korean sample (.71), a European sample (.65), an Israeli sample (.65), and a Chinese sample (.61). The mean convergent validity between the NEO-FFI and the FF-NPQ was .52. Across the seven countries sampled in the NPQ data, the mean convergent validity between the FF-NPQ and PRF measures of Big 5 personality factors was .48. Additional research is reported in detail in the manual.
