SIGMA Assessment Systems is pleased to announce that our vice president, Glen Harrison, will be moderating an insightful roundtable discussion at the Kentucky City and County Management Association (KCCMA) Winter Conference. This year’s conference, scheduled for February 28 — March 1, 2024, focuses on developing leadership and strategic success, with a special emphasis on succession planning for city and county managers.

Discussion Overview: Keys to Effective Succession Planning

The roundtable discussion, titled “The Keys to Succession Planning for Your Organization,” will feature Glen’s expert insights on succession planning processes and best practices. Glen will lead the discussion, sharing his extensive experience and tailored approaches to succession planning across varying organizational sizes and industries. The session will highlight the unique challenges and solutions applicable to municipalities, from small communities to larger cities, offering a rich perspective on leadership continuity and organizational resilience.

Joining Glen on the panel are three city managers who represent a spectrum of municipality sizes: John Ward, City Manager, Calvert City; Rose Beverly, City Manager, Berea; and Daron Jordan, City Manager, Paducah. These panelists will share their experiences and strategies, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of succession planning in contexts similar to their own. This cross-section aims to ensure that every attendee can see their challenges reflected in the discussion and leave with actionable insights.

“Our workshop will introduce best practices in succession planning, tailored to the unique needs and scales of local governments. We’ll explore processes and strategies that demystify succession planning, making it accessible and manageable for municipalities of all sizes,” said Harrison.

Interactive Exercises and Succession Planning Best Practices

Attendees can look forward to a session that not only introduces them to best practices, but also equips them with a SIGMA succession planning toolkit for initiating or enhancing succession planning efforts within their organizations. This includes a comprehensive succession planning workbook and the opportunity to engage in interactive elements, such as identifying critical roles using SIGMA’s Critical Roles Identification Questionnaire and drafting a SIGMA Success Profile™ during the session.

Glen’s extensive background in working with various organizations on succession planning, combined with his successful experiences consulting with local governments, positions him as an ideal leader for this conversation. He plans to share case studies, including successes with municipalities he’s worked with, to illustrate practical examples of effective succession planning in action.

The roundtable seeks to address critical issues, such as the importance of making time for succession planning, the challenge of attracting and retaining talent, and the role of succession planning in talent development. By the end of the discussion, attendees should feel empowered to start or refine their succession planning efforts, leveraging the SIGMA tools and strategies shared during the session.

Continued Support Post-Conference

In addition to the immediate benefits of the workshop, Glen extends an ongoing offer of support and access to resources for all attendees, ensuring the conversation and momentum continue beyond the conference. Said Harrison, “After the conference, we’ll offer continued support and access to resources. Our goal is to empower municipalities to start making tangible progress in their succession planning efforts.”

For local government officials eager to advance their succession planning strategies, Glen recommends visiting SIGMA Assessment Systems’ Succession Planning Toolbox for a wealth of resources, including a succession guide and thought leadership pieces on the state of HR in local government.
