What is the MEIA-W?

The Multidimensional Emotional Intelligence Assessment-Workplace (MEIA-W) was designed to measure emotional intelligence (EI) in work settings. Emotional intelligence allows individuals to perceive, understand, regulate, and express emotions. The MEIA-W consists of 144 items that assess 10 distinct facets of emotional intelligence.

Why Should I Use the MEIA-W?

DISTINCT. The MEIA-W is the only trait-based, self-report measure of EI that captures all 10 facets of Salovey and Mayer’s (1990) influential model of EI. The context-relevant questions were customized for work settings and provide enhanced validity over other context-neutral EI measures.

CONVENIENT. The MEIA-W can be administered in 20 minutes on SIGMA’s online platform – Reports are generated immediately. Results are presented using graphs, numbers, scale descriptions, and sample items that are insightful and easy to understand.

SUPERIOR DEVELOPMENT. The MEIA-W was developed to overcome critical shortcomings found in many popular EI measures. Items were carefully developed, selected, and refined to minimize the influence of response bias that can significantly undermine the validity of test results. Unlike other popular measures, the MEIA-W was designed to reduce the effects of a) social desirability response bias (tendency to present oneself in a favorable light) and b) acquiescence response bias (tendency to positively endorse items even if not descriptive of the self).

RELIABLE AND VALID. The MEIA-W is a reliable and valid measure of EI. Research has shown that the MEIA-W predicts job performance over and above two top predictors of job performance – cognitive ability and personality. Test norms were updated October 2015. They are based on the responses of 1750 job applicants and incumbents (651 male, 603 female) ranging in age from 19 to over 60 (M=40) from a variety of industries, including education, business services, finance, technology, health care, charitable organizations, energy, and natural resources.

NEW REPORT AVAILABLE NOW! The MEIA for Workplace Development Report is a bright, thorough report that provides an extensive introduction with context around the development of the EI measure. It also includes a description of the MEIA-W dimension structure and advice on interpretation of scores. Interpretative advice is identified according to three categorizations: Develop, Enhance, and Refine. A page is devoted to each of the 10 MEIA-W dimensions to take a closer look at the results. The pages contain the detailed dimension definition, relationship to performance, implications of underutilization or overutilization, category score, and feedback based on the score.
